Earnings spotlight: Dave & Buster's Entertainment

Dave & Buster's Entertainment (PLAY) is one of just a handful of companies on the earnings calendar. The entertainment and dining chain will disclose its second-quarter results after Tuesday's close.

Analysts, on average, expect PLAY to report earnings of 84 cents per share, up 40% on a year-over-year (YoY) basis. Revenue is forecast to arrive at $560.7 million (+3.4% YoY).

Recent industry trends and other data measures show that Dave & Buster's underperformed its peers in terms of foot traffic in Q2, says Jefferies analyst Andy Barish (Buy). However, this could be offset by continued momentum in its menu, marking and pricing optimization for games.

The analyst adds that expectations are "seemingly very low" for PLAY this time around "and maybe the quarter acts as a 'clearing event' for the shares to find some near-term support." The consumer discretionary stock is down more than 40% for the year to date.

Earnings spotlight: Adobe

Adobe (ADBE) represents the tech sector on the earnings calendar, with the Photoshop parent's fiscal third-quarter results due out after Thursday's close. ADBE stock gained more than 77% in 2023 – building on its impressive 20-year return – amid software giant's broad push into generative AI initiatives, but upside has been limited this year.

Oppenheimer analyst Brian Schwartz (Outperform, the equivalent of a Buy) says data checks "point to better trends for Adobe's business and slight upside to estimates driven by improving go-to-market initiatives, pricing headwinds turning into tailwinds, strong momentum with Document Cloud and Adobe Express, and growing traction with generative AI."

However, he admits that "the operating environment remains challenging for front-office application suppliers," which could limit Adobe's beat potential relative to fiscal Q3 results and fiscal Q4 guidance.

As for the company's fiscal third-quarter results, analysts expect earnings of $4.53 per share (+10.5% YoY) on revenue of $5.4 billion (+10.2% YoY).
